Heat Wave to Possibly Tie Record

By Rod Hill on 2022-07-31

Portland’s consecutive day run of 90 degree plus heat will likely continue into Monday and possibly Tuesday.  If PDX warms to 90 degrees Tuesday, this current heat wave will go in the books as 10 days in length, tying for the longest stretch of hot days since records began at PDX.

Making this current run of hot weather also unusual has been the high dew points near 60 degrees, which means
increased water vapor and higher humidity than our hot weather typically comes with.  Portland often sees hot
weather accompanied with a dry east wind that produces hot air temperatures but near desert dry humidity levels around 20% and even lower
The past days have seen humidity levels during the heat of the afternoon as high as 40%, producing heat indexes 1-3 degrees hotter than the actual air temperature.

So far, the hottest days of the heat wave have been last Tuesday and Saturday, each reporting a high temperature of 102 degrees.

The historic heat wave of June 2021 saw 90 degree plus temperatures for five consecutive days, including three
straight days reaching over 100 degrees and the all-time Portland temperature record of 116 degrees.

It is worth noting that Portland heat waves typically last 3-5 days.  Having a 6th straight day of 90 degree heat is
somewhat unusual and as mentioned this current heat wave could extend to a 10th, record tying day.
